Additional service enclosure and 40 mm rail supported transparent mechanism guards for the existing sourced feeder. These items are shown in the 3D model. The R1 BOM and workbook retain their original quantities and prices; this addendum records what R3 adds or changes. No new quotes or total purchase price are claimed.
Main frame 1030 × 1390 × 2490 mm · Rear bay 1700 × 750 × 1750 mm · Shade roof 1900 × 950 mm
The hopper guard and front preparation station have their own 40 mm rail support frames, with a crossmember under the soaking-pan motor / cradle. The rear bay sits behind the main feeder, from Z −1500 to −750 mm. Roof overhang reaches Z −1600 mm and X ±950 mm. The open plate is centered at Z +1320 mm, with its rounded surround reaching Z +1610 mm. Allow at least 1.90 m width × 3.21 m depth for the displayed hardware, plus open-door and service clearances. The 2.49 m main frame height is unchanged.

Cabinet skin tiles stay under 600 mm per side. The separate G02 deck (940 × 520 mm) and G03 shield (960 × 360 mm) also fit 609.6 × 1219.2 mm stock. Tiling follows the 3D helper, with 2 mm gaps and printed seam battens. Opaque service surfaces require purchased facing; the underlying acrylic remains the specified thickness.

The plate has moved forward 500 mm. The preparation roof, front crossbars and soaking pan are entirely behind the plate footprint. A raised common chute retains approximately 33.8° slope and exits behind the plate. The soaking pan is raised 130 mm and the hopper 150 mm to preserve the gravity path. The cold-front hatch is raised to the revised chute height. R1 engineering-studio clearance calculations describe the original model; they do not certify the R3 guard geometry.
Contact design targets: R95 outer surround corners; R12 surround / outlet rounding; R60 rear-shield plan corners with R15 captured edge covering. The plate rim and handles are inside the rigid surround; acrylic deck edges, support corners and screw heads are concealed. No flexible push-on trim. Rear-only tool access; no plate actuator. Actual tortoise reach, bite, impact, trapped-gap, cleanability and retention tests remain mandatory prototype work.

| Guard | Dimensions / design basis | Before fabrication |
|---|---|---|
| G01 supplier / fabrication ↗ Rounded plate surround / handle enclosure | 1000 × 580 mm; R95 outer corners; R12 contact edges | Rigid segmented printed surround covers the steel rim, both handles and support corners. Food opening 770 × 364 mm, R45 corners. Concealed underside retention; no exposed screw heads or loose push-on edge trim. Print joints must be flush, sealed and retained. PETG is a prototype, not a proven bite-resistant finished material. |
| G02 supplier / fabrication ↗ Captured acrylic plate deck | 940 × 520 × 6.35 mm; R70 corners | Laser-cut deck is entirely captured beneath the rigid surround. The stainless plate sits on concealed printed risers; all acrylic edges and fasteners are inaccessible from the eating side. Rear-only release after feeder power isolation. Load, attachment and pull-off validation remain open. |
| G03 supplier / fabrication ↗ Rounded rear preparation shield | 960 × 360 × 6.35 mm; R60 panel corners / R15 guard | Fixed transparent shield stays behind the plate. Encapsulated panel edges; rounded, recessed food outlet. This is a separation barrier, not a validated tortoise reach exclusion. Check with an actual head/neck template before animal use. |
| G04 supplier / fabrication ↗ Rounded chute nose / outlet edge cover | 740 mm span; R12 terminal nose | Printed backing and a rounded encapsulated edge protect the chute lip; the final food-contact liner / smooth finish remains to select and test. All solid outlet geometry ends behind the plate footprint. No moving flap or overhead arm above the eating surface. |
| G05 supplier / fabrication ↗ Concealed deck retention / underside covers | 16 M6 positions; candidate fastener stack only | M6 hardware follows the existing McMaster F03/F04 family. Print captured insert housings and tool-access covers below the deck. Covers must require tools and remain captive; no exposed caps, screws or detachable trim near the tortoise. Verify actual stack before selecting screw length. |
General guarding reference: OSHA: guards should not introduce sharp edges, unfinished surfaces or new hazards. This is a general design reference, not a tortoise-specific safety certification.
Dry side: two purchased stainless driver cabinets, separate logic-module enclosure, raised battery shelf and protected power distribution. Wet side: lower water tank, raised peristaltic pump, non-contact level sensor and drip tray with leak sensor. A solid partition separates the two. The opaque canopy and walls provide shade; vent cowls are drawn for inspection but airflow and weather performance are unverified. AC condenser space above the service canopy remains a clearance check.
